When I wrote this there was 33 days to the Eastern Christian Conference. I’m in big trouble because President Johnson asked me to mobilize 1,000 people to ask God to bless ECC ’11! (I know! I only have 10 friends & they won’t all admit it!) But I was thinking, if I could get 10 people to pray with me, 3 times a day, for 33 days, that would be 999 prayers, right? And that is pretty close to 1,000 pray-ers, right? So, if you eat thrice daily, and if you would ask God each time you do (from now until then) to provide many with much good food in Hershey, we’ll all be way ahead (and I will only end up one prayer short) at ECC ’11!

It continues to be my firm belief that many people don’t pray as much as they could because they don’t think it matters – because they don’t think they matter. Some people have said, “Hey, God knows everything, and He cares about everybody, and He can do anything He wants, so what difference does it make if I pray? Doesn’t He have all of that covered?” And I agree – He knows everything, He cares the most, and He can do anything – but I vehemently disagree with the last point. Us praying matters a lot. Like any good parent, God loves giving His children things they want! Like any good teacher, Jesus wants His disciples to expand their ability to trust the Father like He does. Like any good motivator, the Spirit wants us to be passionate about what matters to Jesus! Which is why He devised an open system – God designed our world so that some things will only happen if we ask Him, and they will not happen if we don’t. In this way, He can find delight in giving gifts to us, we can find joy in trusting Him more, and we can actually work with Him in taking care of the planet He gave to us. The idea that there’s no use praying, because God in all His goodness doesn’t need our input? That is a lie from the pit of hell. He loves you so much that He is eagerly waiting – right now – eagerly, listening closely to hear about the things you think are important! What you think, what you want, how you see it – that all matters deeply to Your Father in heaven – because you matter deeply to Him! You matter! That’s why it makes sense to pray – because you matter like crazy to God!

So, if you care about the 2011 Eastern Christian Conference, if ECC ’11 matters to you, please, I beg you, ask God to wildly bless the planning work this month of its president (Dave Johnson) and coordinators (Wayne Murphy and Ken Meade) with as much blessing as they can handle! (And if you ask Him to, He probably will, because I’ve heard that He totally thinks you’re great!)

Welcome to the Eastern Christian Conference!

I hope to be able to say those words to you in person on October 28th in Hershey, PA as we begin the next chapter in the life of this annual gathering that has inspired Christians in the Northeast for over 40 years. For decades the Eastern Christian Convention has been a place to be for excellence in preaching, teaching and worship. That HASNT changed.

The name change was made to better reflect what really happens at the ECC. By definition, a convention is more focused on the business and decision-making that impact larger groups of people. As part of a movement that emphasizes the autonomy of the local church, our purpose for gathering is simply to grow closer to God, one another, and make disciples of Jesus Christ. The definition of “conference” seems more appropriate for what we do.

One of our goals for the 2011 Eastern Christian Conference is inspiration. Our main speakers Arron Chambers and Daryl Reed will do just
that. Both of these men are gifted communicators who will inspire and challenge us through the word of God. Add to that 2 dozen workshops led by some of the best teachers, presenters, and discussion leaders on the planet, and I guarantee you will walk away from the 2011 ECC inspired.

But we can’t stop with inspiration; we must experience transformation as true followers of Jesus Christ. Hence, the theme for the 2011 ECC is Changed Lives. I hope and pray no one walks away from this year’s ECC simply inspired. I pray you walk away changed.

We will share stories of people whose lives have been transformed by Christ – some in major ways and others in small ways. We will celebrate the grace of God working in the lives of people all across this globe. We will unite to help change some of the things that burden the heart of God.

Welcome to the 2011 Eastern Christian Conference – a place where change happens.

See you in Hershey in October,

Dave Johnson, 2011 Eastern Christian Conference President
